Dell Inspiron 15 5584 Laptop – (Should you Buy it)

Dell Inspiron 15 5584 Laptop

The AMD equivalent of the Intel-powered Dell Inspiron 15 5584. However, this is more than simply a CPU switch; as our review below will demonstrate, there are substantial variations between the two versions with regard to the chassis, motherboard, battery life, and overall performance. The products are meant to be a more reasonably priced option to high-end lines like Dell’s XPS, Asus’s ZenBook, HP’s Spectre, and Lenovo’s Yoga 900.

AMD’s newest Zen+ CPUs, including the Ryzen 3 3200U, Ryzen 5 3500U, and Ryzen 7 3700U with integrated Vega graphics, are included in all current Inspiron 5585 SKUs. Display resolution is fixed at 1080p IPS regardless of changes to storage or RAM.

To go head-to-head with other low-priced 15.6-inch multimedia laptops like the HP Pavilion 15, Lenovo IdeaPad 720s, Asus VivoBook S15, and Acer Aspire 5, the model we’re testing today is the more expensive version, with a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of around $780. In this article, we will try to discuss each and every aspect of Dell Inspiron 15 5584.

Specifications of Dell Inspiron 15 5585

Design and Case

These days, the Case of Inspiron laptops are beginning to resemble XPS laptops more and more. The external lid’s silver hue and smooth finish also call to mind Dell’s XPS 15. First impressions are more impressive than those of a Lenovo IdeaPad 330 or HP Pavilion 15.

The plastic used for the exterior lid is of higher quality than that used for the palm rests and keyboard deck, and the plastic bezels are noticeably bulkier than those of the XPS 15.

Because there is some light to moderate bending when pressing down on the outside lid or the center of the keyboard keys, the chassis seems hollow and less sturdy than it should be. The chassis and hinge of our test item are poorly assembled, with irregular gaps between the two.

There isn’t a lot of creaking, and the foundation is very firm generally, which is impressive considering its budget-friendly status. For instance, older Asus VivoBook models have a propensity to twist and creak more frequently. There are some similarities between the 5585 and the 5584, however, the 5585 is larger and heavier. Still, it’s deeper than many other 15.6-inch laptops due to the screen’s larger top and bottom bezels.

Connectivity

The Dell Inspiron 15 5584 still has all of the ports, however, there is a new USB Type-C port, and some of the connectors have been moved somewhat.

The majority of the ports have been moved to the left side where they are now easily accessible. Keep in mind that the RJ-45 jack can only handle Fast Ethernet connections and not the much faster Gbps speeds.

The system is compatible with our 130 W USB Type-C charger, so we can confirm Dell’s claim that Power Delivery is feasible with USB Type-C. The USB Type-C charging port has been rendered obsolete by the inclusion of a proprietary AC adapter port on the system.

Memory Card Reader

Compared to the more expensive XPS series, the built-in card reader is painfully slow. Our UHS-II SD card takes about 27 seconds longer to transfer 1 GB of images to the desktop than the XPS 15.

Network

Since the Inspiron 5585 is an AMD laptop, the inclusion of a non-Intel WLAN card is understandable. The performance of the less common 2×2 Intel 9260 is just one-fourth that of the 1×1 Qualcomm Atheros QCA9377. For the average home user, however, performance is still sufficient and reliable for daily web browsing and streaming.

As can be seen in the illustration below, the Qualcomm module is in the unusual M.2 1630 form factor. In the event that consumers decide to upgrade or switch WLAN modules, the motherboard still supports M.2 2230.

Maintenance

Nine Philips screws are used to secure the bottom panel. Once inside, you can easily replace anything from the RAM and batteries to the storage and WLAN modules.

Components and warranty

Apart from the regular instructions and the AC adaptor, there are no included extras in the box. The typical one-year restricted warranty is in effect. Dell, alongside HP and Lenovo, offers a wide variety of warranties, including some with durations of up to four years.

Keyboard

These illuminated keys feel much like they did on my old Dell Inspiron 15 5584, despite their changed layout. Typing lovers will like the firmer feedback and the clicky Enter and Space buttons compared to the XPS 15.

The Dell Inspiron 15 5584 is not a good option for working with large spreadsheets since the Arrow keys are too small and there are no dedicated PgUp and PgDn buttons.

Touchpad

The click pad’s textured plastic and sizable size (10.5 x 8 cm) are near-identical to those of the Dell Inspiron 15 5584. Even when moving slowly, we notice that the cursor is smooth and precise, but the clicking response is still too soft and might have been tougher.

Display

The LG Philips LP156WFC IPS screen used is currently seen in the Dell Inspiron 15 5584. Thus, for a comparable visual experience, these two computers have comparable contrast levels, response times, and color spaces.

 Dell Inspiron 15 5584 Display

Due to its highly restricted color gamut, this panel is automatically classed as a low-cost choice suitable for the budget-friendly Inspiron family. In comparison to a Dell XPS or an Asus ZenBook, the colors here appear dull.

The XPS 15’s screen brightness is around half that of inexpensive laptops like the Lenovo IdeaPad 330, but otherwise, they’re on par. Even while we’re relieved that this isn’t a low-end TN or 768p panel, it still isn’t great.

Performance

AMD’s response to the 15 W Intel Core i7-8565U and Core i7-8550U is the Ryzen 7 3700U. It offers much quicker graphics performance than the aforementioned Intel counterparts despite operating at a higher cTDP of up to 35 W.

 Dell Inspiron 15 5584

The Inspiron 15 5585 series does not offer dedicated graphics options, despite the fact that the motherboard has a slot for one. Regardless of the WiFi configuration, LatencyMon displays no difficulties with real-time audio recording.

Processor

AMD claims that the new Zen+ Ryzen 7 3700U processor should be 10% quicker than its earlier Zen Ryzen 7 2700U processor.

However, our independent observations are more uneven. However, the 3700U is able to keep slightly higher clock rates for longer when Repeated runs of CineBench R15 Multi-Thread yield a paltry 5% performance increase. It won’t be difficult to switch from a Ryzen 7 2700U to a Ryzen 7 3700U, as the difference in CPU performance is little in practice.

Storage

The internal storage options are a single M.2 2280 slot and a single 2.5-inch SATA III bay. Our evaluation unit comes with an inexpensive 512 GB PCIe SSD from WDC named the SN520, which uses the less common M.2 2230 form factor. PCIe solid-state drives (SSDs) have subpar data transmission rates.

The Toshiba BG3 and the more expensive Samsung PM981 both have sequential read and write speeds of roughly 1000 MB/s, although the more affordable Samsung PM981’s rates are closer to 400 and 900 MB/s, respectively.  Performance is sufficient for residential users, who often prioritize capacity over extremely fast transfer rates.
